What to Know Before Laser Hair Removal on Bikini and Underarms

Summer is fast approaching, and it’s best to be ready, especially when it comes to your skincare routine.

Aside from putting on extra sunblock to protect your skin from too many UV rays, it’s also ideal to come up with a more permanent plan to get rid of unwanted hair.

Fortunately, it’s now possible.

Thanks to laser hair removal, you can finally ditch shaving, waxing, or threading for a hassle-free and hair-free summer. Let’s take a look at how it works.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

As its name suggests, a laser hair removal treatment targets unwanted body hair particularly those on the face, legs, underarms, back, and bikini area.

Laser hair removal works by heating hair follicles, resulting in “dormant” hair follicles, causing new hair growth to become weaker and thinner over time.

With each treatment, the appearance of hair strands becomes finer and less noticeable.

After their first treatment, most patients will see about a 10%-25% reduction in hair. Once finishing treatment, they may see up to 70% of hair reduction, or sometimes more. Results vary between patients and follow-up appointments may be required. Generally speaking, most patients need eight sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart.

What to Know Before Laser Hair Removal

If you’re interested to get laser hair removal, especially on your bikini area and underarms, here are some of the things you should know before getting the treatment:

Shave the Area Before the Treatment

Lasers can remove unwanted hair however, to be effective, the treated area must be cleanly shaved within 24 hours prior to the treatment.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Stay out of the sun for as long as possible before treatment. In most cases, areas cannot be treated if they’ve been exposed directly to the sun within 2-4 weeks prior to the procedure.

Do Not Tweeze or Wax

Only shaving prior to the treatment is allowed. In other words, you cannot tweeze, wax, or even pluck the area being treated prior to or even between sessions.

Avoid Fake Tanning Products

You cannot use any fake tanning products for at least 3-4 weeks before your laser hair removal appointment.

Also, ensure that you have thoroughly removed all the residues beforehand.

What to Expect During and After the Treatment

During the treatment, your provider will determine the best type of laser for your skin and hair. Of course, your desired results will also be considered.

Once the treatment starts, the laser will emit concentrated beams of light throughout the treatment area. At most, you may feel mild discomfort or what many describe as a quick “rubber band snap” feeling.

After the procedure, you’ll be advised to avoid sun exposure since it can lead to skin irritation. You will also be asked to avoid using deodorants, hot showers, or saunas. You can take lukewarm showers instead.

Lastly, if you’ve had laser hair removal in the bikini area, wait for the swelling to go down before engaging in extreme physical movements.
