Ultherapy is a nonsurgical treatment and uses ultrasound technology that stimulates collagen production from within. It also tightens and lifts the tissue on your neck, jawline and under the chin for that lifted, more youthful look. The treatment has also been FDA-approved and is recently becoming more popular as a nonsurgical alternative to a facelift.
So, is Ultherapy the right treatment for you? Keep reading to find out!
Who is a Good Candidate for Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is most beneficial for people with mild to moderate skin laxity, particularly those who are in their 30s, 40s, or early 50s. Due to the natural aging process, patients around these ages tend to notice the following:
Drooping eyebrows
A sagging neck
The appearance of jowls or sagging skin along the jawline
However, Ultherapy is safe and suitable for any skin tone or type.
What Happens During the Treatment
Your individual goals and concerns will determine how long the treatment might take. To give you an idea, a face-and-neck procedure can last from 60 up to 90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes about 30 minutes.
So, here’s what to expect during the treatment:
Your provider will gently cleanse your skin.
To minimize discomfort, a topical numbing agent will be applied to your skin. Some patients are even given oral medication that usually takes an hour to kick in.
Your provider will then apply an ultrasound conductive gel.
They’ll then move a handheld device across the skin’s surface to allow ultrasound energy to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin.
Your provider will adjust the treatment depth depending on the area:
Superficial Dermis at 1.5 mm.
Deep Dermis at 3 mm.
Platysma Muscles at 4.5 mm.
TAKE NOTE: Most providers will offer you options to ease any discomfort. Your provider can apply topical numbing agents or offer oral painkillers to make the treatment as painless as possible.
The treatment is ultrasound-based, so it uses heat energy with a temperature that can go as high as 60°C to reach the subcutaneous tissue. You may feel a bit of warmth and perhaps a little discomfort, but this only lasts while the ultrasound energy is emitted and immediately stops once the procedure is done.
The Results
Most patients notice a subtle skin tightening effect right after the treatment, thanks to the contraction of the existing collagen fibers. The full result typically reveals itself over the next 3 to 6 months since it takes time for the new collagen to form and to kick in.
While the results can last between one to two years, they aren’t permanent. Combining the right skin care regimen (complete with sun protection) and a healthy lifestyle can help prolong the results.
You can also achieve an even better outcome if your provider is more experienced. Keep in mind that before proceeding with an Ultherapy treatment, you should consult a board-certified provider to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment.
